When I’m not writing app reviews for you beautiful people, I’m diligently trawling the net for new and exciting music, or the next gig to go to — barely a month goes by where I don’t go out and see at least one artist play. Yet, there’s still a depressing number of concerts that I miss out on, simply because I didn’t know they were happening. There are few things that upset me more than missing a performance from an artist I adore.
So, in this sense, Bandsintown is more than just a notification service for touring artists — it’s a sort of side-effect-free anti-depressant.
Usually, these ‘tell me your fave bands and I’ll tell you when they’re touring’ apps are a pain to set up, especially when you love a few hundred different artists. Bandsintown makes this process easy, however, as it uses your Last.fm/Pandora accounts and Facebook likes. So just by logging in, my list was already populated with my fave artists and as it turns out, I’d totally missed the fact that one of them was playing just next week, at a bar not 10 minutes from my house.
If you’ve got nothing to do, it also allows you to browse who’s playing around town on any given night. Weekends will never again be boogie-free.

This app is so brilliantly executed that I don’t know what I did before I installed it. It allows you to swipe from any of nine edges of your screen to quickly access a ‘pad’ populated with up to 12 shortcuts — apps, contacts, bookmarks, Android shortcuts and, with the WidgetPad add-on ($1.49), any widget — accessible from any app. With the MoreSpace add-on ($1.99), you can even assign different ‘pads’ to different corners.

This adorable puzzler is disguised as a town sim. It’s also addictive and between sessions of lining up objects three in a row and planning combos, I find myself dreaming of frustrating red-eyed bears ruining my day in the most peculiar ways: parking my car, bear in the way; climbing out of the shower, bear in my way; going to the fridge for a beer, it’s been replaced by a tiny bear! For a few bucks you can unlock the full version, making it better value than cigarettes.

Dwarves, beards, axes, mines, minerals, sandwiches — if beer was involved, there would be fewer lists more exciting. As a dwarf, you’re bound by lore to dig holes into mountainsides, but you’re also bound by the laws of thermodynamics; that is, you need energy to dig. So choose your routes wisely and conserve your stamina, for if you run out, you’ll lose your treasure. You also only have a finite number of ladders and must avoid countless hazards. Two modes of play give a touch more value to this great title.
