Verdict:
The versatile Galaxy Note 3 may well be the best thing to come out of Samsung’s warehouse till date. The phablet gives multitasking a whole new meaning with its large display, stylus support and extra long battery life. It allows its users to be creative and productive, making it ideal for both work and play. Fast, powerful and functional, it has every change of leaving the competition to bite the dust.
The Galaxy Note 3 was one of the most anticipated handsets of 2013. If the original Galaxy Note was a game changer, the third iteration of the phablet was expected to set the bar for all future devices. The tech experts over at KYM spent some time with the handset to find out just how well it lives up to expectations.
  • Design and Build
The Galaxy Note 3 proves that big really is beautiful. Granted, not everyone is enamored by the gigantism of a phablet, but Samsung has pulled off the designing of its offering with élan. The sleek, 8.3mm thin handset boasts of evenly balanced proportions with the same amount of bodywork above and below the touch display and a bezel so thin, it’s practically invisible.
We especially like the way the chrome surround around the edges of the phone and the Home button contrasts with the rest of the bodywork. Capacitive controls and physical buttons and ports are conveniently placed so as to aid easy operation on the handset too.
Samsung has given its phablet a removable plastic back panel that carries accents of a soft faux leather effect. Certainly better than the shiny plastic we are used to seeing on the tech giant’s devices, it gives the phablet a richer, more sophisticated feel. However, it still lacks the premium feel of a high-end handset.
All in all, the Galaxy Note 3 is solidly built and durable and the surround’s ridged ‘pages’ prove excellent grip. It is lightweight and well-balanced in the hand, which is not something we can say for all phablets. Of course, the handset is designed for ideal use with two hands, hence the stylus.
  • Display
The Galaxy Note 3’s 5.7-inch display is gorgeous and offers incredibly robust colour, contrast and brightness. It’s Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and 386ppi pixel density lends it a sharpness that is otherwise very difficult to achieve on a screen of this size. The phablet is easily usable outside in bright sunlight as well and its clear viewing angles make watching videos with others a breeze.
