Best Android puzzle games of 2014
Next to strategy games, puzzles games are one of my favorites to play. I enjoy the mental challenge of puzzle games and that I can pick them up and play them at any time. 2012 saw the release of several cool and challenging titles from the genre. These today are the ones I (and my kids) enjoyed the most this year.
Monsters Ate My Condo ($0.99)
If I had to describe this game in one word, it would be crazy. Four bizarre monsters have invaded the city and they are hungry. You need to feed Boat Head, Reginald Starfire, Mr. Shigoto and Lord Ferocious by sliding the appropriately colored buildings into their mouths. Once you get into the game you will fully grasp its insanity. The lights, music, art style, and speed of the game make for a unique, exciting, and enjoyable game.
The premise of the game is simple; swipe the color buildings to the monster with the corresponding color. You earn more points when three or more of the same color condo are stacked together. The color condos continually fall, so you have to be quick. If you give the wrong color condo to a monster, they are not happy. The game comes with a tutorial if needed. There are two game modes: Endless and Time Attack. In Endless you play until your stack of condos falls over and the goal in Time Attack is to get the best score within a certain amount of time.
Where’s My Perry? Free (Free)
Where’s My Perry? is the cousin to Disney’s Where’s My Water?, and a game I have to fight my kids to play. In this game you help Agent P, who is a platypus, get to headquarters. To get there he must travel through transportation tubes but Dr. Doofenshmirtz , the evil villain, has blocked the way. You need to figure out how to use the water to active the transportation tubes. You utilize water in all its different forms, including ice, steam, and liquid, in order to solve the puzzle.
The game currently has four missions with 20 levels in each. There is also a locked area that you can access via in-app purchase. When doing each puzzle you need to try and collect all three gnomes and the top-secret collectibles to unlock secret files and become a top spy. The game really is a challenge and I find myself redoing most levels over and over again to improve my score and find all of the secret items.
Quell ($1.99)
Quell is a quiet, relaxing puzzle game when compared the two mentioned above. The market description of the game calls it a zen puzzler and I would have to agree. The graphics and background music create a very peaceful ambiance to the game. The game gives you three profiles and a huge number of in-game achievements.
The game has seven stages, all labeled between the years 1928 to 1946. Within each year there are three stages. Once you choose a stage, then you pick a level. If it is your first time for a stage you must complete the levels in order to unlock them and the next stage. The goal for each level is to swipe the raindrop around the board to collect all of the pearls. You will want to collect all of the pearls in the least amount of moves. You can only move the raindrop up/down and right/left, thus the challenge. As you progress you will earn hints that can come in handy.
MegaCity ($0.99)
This is a new game to Android and quite challenging. In this game you are given the task of building a city, one block at a time. The game board is broken into city blocks and columns in a six by six grid. The buildings you can place appear in the building queue to the left. You then need to place them in the grid with the goal of building houses with positive value on them. Once the column to the far left has reached its needed value, it disappears and a new column appears to the right. You continue until you cannot clear any more columns.
There are a variety of different buildings you can place, some will help and others will hinder. Police, library, hospital all help, will parking lots, landfills, and prisons are less desirable. The key to the game is to try and plan ahead. You need to make sure you have spots open to help get positive values on the homes and that you can clear the far left column. You can see what is coming in the queue but where to place them. The game comes with six in-game challenges in addition to the regular game. The developer likes to call it “Tetris meets Sim City” and it will keep you busy for a while.
So what puzzle games do you like? Which ones did you spend the most time on in 2012? As I said I have played a lot of them this year, but these are some that stood out to me and my kids. Can’t wait to see what 2013 will bring.
